Abstract
A fibrous insulation product, such as a fibrous insulation blanket or board product, includes a plurality of fibers that are entangled together and a crosslinked aromatic polymeric binder that bonds the plurality of fibers together. The fibrous insulation product includes between 80 and 99 weight percent of the fibers and between 1% by weight and 20% by weight of the crosslinked aromatic binder. The fibrous insulation product has a density of between 0.4 and 6.0 pounds per cubic foot (pcf) and an R-value of between 4 and 50. The crosslinked aromatic polymeric binder has an aromaticity of greater than 10%.
Claims27
A method of forming a fibrous insulation product, the method comprising:
- providing a plurality of entangled fibers;
- mixing a highly aromatic multifunctional polyol with a polyfunctional acid;
- applying the mixed highly aromatic multifunctional polyol and polyfunctional acid to the plurality of entangled fibers;
- passing the entangled fibers through an oven to react the highly aromatic multifunctional polyol with the acid to form a crosslinked aromatic polymeric binder that bonds the plurality of entangled fibers together and thereby forms a fibrous insulation blanket or board product;
- wherein the highly aromatic multifunctional polyol and acid are applied so that the aromatic polymeric binder is present in the fibrous insulation blanket or board product in an amount of between 1 and 20 weight percent.
A method of forming a binder for a fibrous insulation product, the method comprising:
- providing a highly aromatic multifunctional polyol;
- and
- reacting a polyfunctional acid with the highly aromatic multifunctional polyol to form an aromatic polymeric binder.
