A method for making a synthetic mineral, the method comprising making a synthetic mineral precursor by a precipitation reaction between
- a metal silicate and/or germanate, and
- a divalent or trivalent metal salt,
- wherein the metal silicate and/or germanate comprises a metal disilicate and/or digermanate;
- and
- wherein the precipitation reaction does not include addition of an acid or a hydroxide base reagent to chemically equilibrate the precipitation reaction.
