Abstract
The present invention describes a system that uses ultrasonic waves to transfer energy and data, enabling for the control and recharging of a cardiac assist device. Data and energy transfer are accomplished using pulsed ultrasonic waves. The use of ultrasonic waves allows for wireless transcutaneous energy transfer to power the cardiac assist device pump in absence of a driveline, reducing complications associated with driveline infections and improving patient quality of life.
Claims16
A system configured to wirelessly control and wirelessly provide power to a cardiac assist device, the system comprising:
- an implantable cardiac assist pump;
- and
- an extracorporeal energy source;
- wherein energy is transferred from the extracorporeal energy source to the implantable cardiac assist pump using pulsed ultrasonic waves emitted by piezoelectric transducers for at least a portion of the energy transfer path configured to enable wireless transcutaneous energy transfer between the extracorporeal energy source and the implantable cardiac assist pump, wherein a single bit of data is encoded in multiple ultrasonic pulses.
A system to power a medical device, the system comprising:
- an extracorporeal element;
- and
- a converter;
- wherein direct current electric energy from the extracorporeal element is converted to acoustic energy by the converter, so as to wirelessly and transcutaneously power an implanted device, wherein the acoustic energy is transferred from the extracorporeal element to the implanted device using pulsed ultrasonic waves emitted by piezoelectric transducers, wherein a single bit of data is encoded in multiple ultrasonic pulses.
