Abstract
Systems for pipe tallying in well drilling operations and methods for using the same are described. The pipe tallying systems determine a number of pipe joints that pass through an inlet based on the diameter of the pipe joint when compared against a drill pipe diameter. The pipe tally system maintains a tally of drill pipes in a borehole and the pipe tally system can produce a borehole depth measurement based on the length of pipe in the borehole.
Claims8
A method for determining weight on bit (WOB) during drilling of a borehole, the method comprising:
- determining a pipe tally for drilling pipes entering into the borehole using a pipe tally system;
- determining WOB data via a drilling control system;
- determining a joint between adjacent drilling pipes is passing through an entry into the borehole, the joint having a diameter greater than a pipe diameter;
- and
- correcting the WOB data for errors due to increased frictional forces applied to the joint as the joint passes through the entry.
A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising a plurality of instructions executable by one or more processors, the plurality of instructions comprising instructions which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform actions including:
- determining a pipe tally for drilling pipes entering into a borehole using a pipe tally system;
- determining WOB data via a drilling control system;
- determining a joint between adjacent drilling pipes is passing through an entry into the borehole, the joint having a diameter greater than a pipe diameter;
- and
- correcting the WOB data for errors due to increased frictional forces applied to the joint as the joint passes through the entry.
