Abstract
An exit device including an intermediate transmission assembly transmitting the translation of an input into a rotational vertical rod output is disclosed. An upper door latch receiving a rotational vertical rod input to actuate an upper door latch from a latched position to an unlatched position is further disclosed. A lower latch receiving a rotational vertical rod input to actuate a lower latch from a latched position to an unlatched position is additionally disclosed.
Claims18
A door latch assembly, comprising:
- a latch comprising a bolt reciprocable in a vertical direction from an extended, latched position to a retracted, unlatched position and from the retracted, unlatched position to the extended, latched position along a reciprocation axis;
- and
- a rotatable input rotatable about the substantially vertical direction, the rotatable input having a rotatable input latched position and a rotatable input unlatched position, the rotatable input rotatable about the vertical direction from the rotatable input latched position to the rotatable input unlatched position and from the rotatable input unlatched position to the rotatable input latched position, the rotatable input maintaining the latch in the latched position when the rotatable input maintains the rotatable input latched position;
- and
- a crank link rotatable in response to a rotation of the rotatable input, wherein the crank link rotates on a crank link rotation axis orthogonal to the vertical direction.

An egress point, comprising:
- a door frame positioned above a floor, the door frame defining an opening allowing pedestrian egress across the floor;
- a door connected to the door frame, the door rotatable between a closed position blocking pedestrian egress through the door frame and an open position allowing pedestrian egress through the door frame;
- a receiver extending through the floor;
- a lower latch having a latched position, in the latched position the lower latch cooperating with the receiver to secure the door in the closed position, the lower latch having an unlatched position allowing the door to be moved from the closed position toward the open position;
- a lower vertical rod rotatable about a vertical rod axis of rotation to actuate the lower latch from the latched position to the unlatched position;
- a cam coupled to the lower vertical rod, the cam comprising a cam arm extending radially outward from the vertical rod axis of rotation;
- and
- a crank link rotatable in response to the lower vertical rod rotating about the vertical rod axis of rotation, the crank link rotatable between a crank link latched position and a crank link unlatched position, wherein the crank link is in contact with the cam arm when the crank link is in the crank link unlatched position.

An egress point, comprising:
- a door frame positioned above a floor, the door frame defining an opening allowing pedestrian egress across the floor;
- a door connected to the door frame, the door rotatable between a closed position blocking pedestrian egress through the door frame and an open position allowing pedestrian egress through the door frame;
- a receiver extending through the floor;
- a lower latch having a latched position, in the latched position the lower latch cooperating with the receiver to secure the door in the closed position, the lower latch having an unlatched position allowing the door to be moved from the closed position toward the open position;
- and
- a lower vertical rod rotatable about a vertical rod axis of rotation to actuate the lower latch from the latched position to the unlatched position;
- wherein the lower latch reciprocates about a reciprocation axis, and the reciprocation axis is parallel to the vertical rod axis of rotation.
