The invention relates to a surface size composition for surface sizing of paper, board, or the like. The composition comprises at least an aluminium compound and an anionic lignin-carbohydrate complex.

A surface size composition for surface sizing of paper or board, wherein the composition comprises at least an aluminium compound and an anionic lignin-carbohydrate complex, where lignin and carbohydrate are covalently bound with each other, and wherein the lignin-carbohydrate complex has a weight average molecular weight MW>12 000 g/mol.
