Abstract
A draw solute for the forward osmosis membrane process comprises a random copolymer obtainable by random addition of a monomer containing ethylene oxide and butylene oxide to a compound having one or more hydroxyl groups.

A draw solute for the forward osmosis membrane process, the draw solute comprising a random copolymer obtainable by random addition of a monomer containing ethylene oxide and butylene oxide to a compound having two or more hydroxyl groups, wherein a molar ratio of ethylene oxide to butylene oxide is 2.5:1 to 5:1.
