Abstract
A surgical instrument includes a drive member movable by a drive motor between a home position and an end of stroke. A mechanical stop is disposed at or near the end of stroke and is structured to increase resistance to movement of the drive member from a first position to a second position. A control system detects a current spike associated with the increased resistance and interrupts power to the drive motor.
Claims16
A surgical system, comprising:
- (a) an elongate shaft defining a longitudinal axis;
- (b) an end effector, comprising:
- (i) a first jaw;
- (ii) a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is movable relative to said second jaw between an open position and a closed position;
- and
- (iii) a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein and a sled operable to eject said staples;
- (c) an articulation joint connecting said end effector to said elongate shaft;
- (d) a first gear assembly at least partially located within said articulation joint and configured to transfer rotary drive motion through said articulation joint to rotatably drive said end effector relative to said elongate shaft about said longitudinal axis;
- (e) a second gear assembly at least partially located within said articulation joint and configured to transfer rotary drive motion through said articulation joint to actuate said end effector through a staple firing stroke:
- (i) a drive screw operatively coupled with and rotatable by said second gear assembly;
- and
- (ii) a firing driver threadably engaged with said drive screw and including a first cam configured to engage said first jaw and a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during said staple firing stroke,
- wherein said firing driver is drivable distally by said second gear assembly via said drive screw through said staple firing stroke to drive said sled distally through said staple cartridge and thereby eject said staples,
- wherein said firing driver is retractable proximally by said second gear assembly via said drive screw while said sled remains positioned distally within said staple cartridge.
11 more elements
A surgical system, comprising:
- (a) an elongate shaft defining a longitudinal axis;
- (b) an end effector, comprising:
- (i) a first jaw;
- (ii) a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is movable relative to said second jaw between an open position and a clamped position;
- and
- (iii) a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein;
- (c) an articulation joint connecting said end effector to said elongate shaft;
- (d) a first rotary drive system including a first gear assembly configured to transfer rotary drive motion through said articulation joint to rotatably drive said end effector relative to said elongate shaft about said longitudinal axis;
- and
- (e) a second rotary drive system, comprising:
- (i) a second gear assembly configured to transfer rotary drive motion through said articulation joint to actuate said end effector through a staple firing stroke, wherein said second gear assembly is nested within said first gear assembly;
- (ii) a drive screw;
- (iii) a threadably engaged with said drive screw, wherein said is movable between a proximal position and a distal position during said staple firing stroke, and wherein said comprises a first cam configured to engage said first jaw and a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during said staple firing stroke;
- and
- (iv) a sled configured to eject said staples from said staple cartridge during said staple firing stroke, wherein said sled is pushed distally by said during said staple firing stroke, wherein said is retractable back into its proximal position by said second rotary drive system when said second rotary drive system is operated in reverse, and wherein said sled is not pulled proximally by said drive member when said is retracted.
