Abstract
A system and method of operating a content distribution system includes generating a first request for first content by a first user device. Based on the first request for the first content, the first content is pre-positioned by communicating the first content to a downstream storage device closer to a second user device without communicating the first content to the first user device using the downstream storage device; and storing the first content in the downstream storage device as pre-positioned content. The method further includes communicating the first content to the second user device from the downstream storage device.
Claims114
A method comprising:
- generating a first request for first content by a first user device in a first branch of a plurality of branches of a content distribution system, said first branch comprising a first network cache, a first edge cache and a first intermediate device;
- discovering from the first request a presence of the first content within a content distribution network and a uniform resource locator of the first content at a DNS module;
- determining a content priority of the first content;
- communicating the first content to the first user device through the first branch and the first edge cache;
- based on the first request for the first content, discovering the presence of the first content, the uniform resource locator of the first content and the content priority of the first content at a second user device in a second branch different than the first branch, said second user device different than the first user device, said second branch comprising a second edge cache coupled to a second intermediate device and coupled to a second network cache, pre-positioning the first content by,
- communicating the first content to the second branch comprising the second intermediate device closer to the second user device through the second edge cache and the second network cache without communicating the first content to the first user device using the second intermediate device;
- and
- storing the first content in the second intermediate device as pre-positioned content;
- and
- communicating the first content to the second user device from the second intermediate device.
A system comprising:
- a first user device in a first branch of a content distribution system generating a first request for first content, said first branch comprising a first edge cache coupled to a first network cache and a first intermediate device;
- a DNS module discovering from the first request a presence of the first content within a content distribution network and a uniform resource locator of the first content;
- in the content distribution system, determining a content priority of the first content;
- said content distribution system, communicating the first content to the first user device through the first branch and the first edge cache;
- a second user device in a second branch comprising a second edge cache coupled to a second intermediate device and a second network cache, said second user device different than the first user device;
- and
- based on the first request for the first content, the DNS module discovering the presence of the first content, the uniform resource locator of the first content and the content priority of the first content at the second user device, said content distribution system programmed to pre-position the first content by being programmed to
- communicate the first content to the second branch comprising the second intermediate device closer to a second user device through the second edge cache and the second network cache without communicating the first content to the first user device using the second intermediate device;
- and
- store the first content in the second intermediate device as pre-positioned content;
- and
- said content distribution system programmed to communicate the first content to the second user device from the second intermediate device.
