Abstract
A flow tagging technique includes tagging a data flow at a plurality of points in the data flow. For example, the data flow can be tagged at a socket and at a proxy manager API. By tagging the data flow at multiple points, it becomes possible to map network service usage activities to the appropriate initiating applications.
Claims16
A mobile device comprising:
- a processor;
- a modem configured to exchange data wirelessly between the mobile device and a wireless network;
- and
- a non-transitory memory storing a plurality of applications executable on the processor, and further storing a system service configured to be called by any of the plurality of applications to manage at least one of a file download or a data stream from a network element of the wireless network on behalf of a calling application of the plurality of applications;
- wherein the processor is configured to:
- store an identifier of the calling application of the plurality of applications for which the system service opens a network socket to manage at least one of the file download or the data stream from the network element of the wireless network on behalf of the calling application, the identifier identifying the calling application of the plurality of applications;
- measure an amount of the data being wirelessly exchanged between the mobile device and the wireless network, via the modem, and is attributable to the network socket opened for the calling application of the plurality of applications;
- and
- store a traffic volume of the network socket opened for the calling application of the plurality of applications, the traffic volume being based on the measured amount of the data that is wirelessly exchanged between the mobile device and the wireless network, via the modem, and is attributable to the network socket opened for the calling application of the plurality of applications.
A method for use by a mobile device including a processor, a modem configured to exchange data wirelessly between the mobile device and a wireless network, and a non-transitory memory storing a plurality of applications executable on the processor, and further storing a system service configured to be called by any of the plurality of applications to manage at least one of a file download or a data stream from a network element of the wireless network on behalf of a calling application of the plurality of applications, the method comprising:
- storing an identifier of the calling application of the plurality of applications for which the system service opens a network socket to manage at least one of the file download or the data stream from the network element of the wireless network on behalf of the calling application, the identifier identifying the calling application of the plurality of applications;
- measuring an amount of the data being wirelessly exchanged between the mobile device and the wireless network, via the modem, and is attributable to the network socket opened for the calling application of the plurality of applications;
- and
- storing a traffic volume of the network socket opened for the calling application of the plurality of applications, the traffic volume being based on the measured amount of the data that is wirelessly exchanged between the mobile device and the wireless network, via the modem, and is attributable to the network socket opened for the calling application of the plurality of applications.
