Abstract
A hierarchical approach is provided to integrate functions and components into the various systems and subsystems within a distribution network, including standardization of modular and scalable power electronics power blocks with embedded diagnostics and prognostics.
Claims26
A solid-state power substation (SSPS) system comprising:
- a plurality of smart universal power electronic regulators (SUPERs), each SUPER comprising an intelligent power stage (IPS) operable to control power transferred through the SUPER from a power input to a power output, the plurality of SUPERs including multiple SUPERs each configured according to one of a plurality of converter classes;
- wherein the plurality of converter classes includes a DC load interface (DCLI) and an AC load interface (ACLI);
- a first level controller communicatively coupled to each of the plurality of SUPERs, the first level controller configured to transmit and receive communications to each of the plurality of SUPERs, the first level controller operable to transmit SUPER constraints to each of the plurality of SUPERs;
- a feeder operable to supply or receive power from a SUPER of the plurality of SUPERS;
- wherein each of the plurality of SUPERs is configured to control a characteristic of the power transferred from the power input to the power output based on the SUPER constraints received from the first level controller;
- wherein each of the plurality of SUPERs includes a controller operable to transmit and receive communications from the first level controller, wherein the controller of each of the plurality of SUPERs is operable to receive IPS health information from the IPS, wherein the controller of each of the plurality of SUPERs is operable to transmit sensor information and health information to the first level controller, wherein the health information transmitted from the controller to the first level controller is based on the IPS health information received by the controller from the IPS;
- a second level controller communicatively coupled with the first level controller along with at least one additional first level controller, the second level controller configured to receive information from the first level controller pertaining to distribution of power to the plurality of SUPERs under control of the first level controller and additional information pertaining to distribution of power to a second plurality of SUPERs under control of the at least one additional first level controller, wherein the second level controller is operable to supply command information to direct the first level controller and the at least one additional first level controller to coordinate optimal power distribution relative to both the plurality of SUPERs under control of the first level controller and the second plurality of SUPERs under control of the at least one additional first level controller;
- and
- wherein the first level controller is operable to determine the SUPER constraints for each of the plurality of SUPERs based on the sensor information and the health information received from each of the plurality of SUPERs and the command information received from the second level controller, wherein the SUPER constraints are determined so that power transmission to and/or from each of the plurality of SUPERs is coordinated in aggregate by the first level controller for optimization of power distribution across the plurality of SUPERs under control of the first level controller and the second plurality of SUPERs.
