System and method for importing and exporting data between tapes to cloud storage

A computer program product, the computer program product being tangibly embodied on a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium and comprising instructions that, when executed by at least one computing device, are configured to cause the at least one computing device to:

• receive a request to copy a dataset comprising blocks of records from a tape mounted in standard label mode to object storage;
• perform an allocation of the dataset on the mounted tape, including changing the standard label mode to bypass label processing mode;
• open the dataset in bypass label processing mode;
• read, for the dataset, at least one header, content block-by-block, and at least one trailer;
• and
• organize the dataset in the object storage in an object structure, the object structure including the dataset and identifying the dataset within the object storage using the at least one header and the at least one trailer.

A mainframe system comprising:

• at least one memory including instructions;
• and
• at least one processor that is operably coupled to the at least one memory and that is arranged and configured to execute instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to:
• receive a request to copy a dataset comprising blocks of records from a tape mounted in standard label mode to object storage;
• perform an allocation of the dataset on the mounted tape, including changing the standard label mode to bypass label processing mode;
• open the dataset in bypass label processing mode;
• read, for the dataset, at least one header, content block-by-block, and at least one trailer;
• and
• organize the dataset in the object storage in an object structure, the object structure including the dataset and identifying the dataset within the object storage using the at least one header and the at least one trailer.
