An apparatus for conducting a heat-mediated transformation of a material, comprising a vessel having an inlet to receive the material in an interior volume of the vessel, and an outlet for discharging a product of the heat-mediated transformation of the material, and a joule heating structure disposed in the interior volume of the vessel, the joule heating structure comprising a three-dimensional substrate having an electrically conductive carbon network coated on a surface of the substrate, wherein the electrically conductive carbon network has a G/D Raman spectral intensity ratio in a range of from 1 to 6, and a resistivity in a range of from 0.8 Ω-m to 300 Ω-m, and is arranged to provide joule heat for the heat-mediated transformation of the material upon flow of electrical current through the electrically conductive carbon network.
