Abstract
This invention provides processes for reducing the environmental availability of one or more environmental pollutants in solids, liquids, and combinations of solids and liquids.
Claims14
A process for reducing environmental availability of at least a portion of one or more environmental pollutants in a substance comprising one or more environmental pollutants, which process comprises
- adding and/or applying an inorganic halide compound or an inorganic sulfide compound to said substance, wherein the inorganic halide compound comprises one or more inorganic fluorides, inorganic chlorides, inorganic bromides, and/or inorganic iodides, and
- adding and/or applying a sorbent to said substance, wherein a substrate material of the sorbent is a bromine-containing carbonaceous material, and wherein the inorganic halide compound or inorganic sulfide compound and sorbent are not mixed or combined prior to application to the substance and an amount of the sorbent relative to the inorganic halide compound or inorganic sulfide compound is between 0.01 wt % and 0.1 wt %,
- thereby reducing environmental availability of at least a portion of one or more environmental pollutants in the substance,
- wherein the substance comprising the environmental pollutants is a solid, a liquid, or a combination of at least one solid and at least one liquid.
