Abstract

A system and method for powering a medical device that includes a fixture configured for periodic patient proximity; external electrical coupling device integrated into the fixture wherein the external electrical coupling device comprises at least one external energy coupler and is configured to detect presence of an electrical medical device implant in a transmission zone of the external electrical coupling device; an electrical medical device implant, wherein the electrical medical device implant comprises at least one implant energy coupler; and wherein the external electrical coupling device is configured to couple to the implantable medical device through a wireless energy transmission between the external energy coupler and the implant energy coupler when presence of the implantable medical device is within a transmission zone.

Dependent claims

A system for powering a medical device comprising:

a medical implant device comprising:
a set of implant energy couplers including at least a first implant energy coupler and a second implant energy coupler positioned in non-parallel directions, and
a set of electrodes and implant control circuitry configured to deliver electrical stimulation to tissue in response to a stimulation signal received through at least one of the first and second implant energy coupler;
an external electrical coupling system comprising an array of external energy couplers, and external control circuitry configured to be selectively engaged for wireless energy transmission from multiple external energy couplers in the array of external energy couplers to at least one of the first or second implant energy couplers;
wherein the external control circuitry is further configured to determine a relative orientation of the implant and thereby an orientation of the patient, based at least in part on energy coupling strength between the external energy couplers and the set of implant energy couplers;
and
wherein the external control circuitry is further configured to modify the stimulation signal based on the orientation of the patient.
