The present invention is concerned with a photosynthetic scaffold that delivers oxygen and its uses for tissue engineering and the treatment of ischemia.

A method of treating a portion of a body, comprising applying a sprayable formulation to the portion of the body, wherein the sprayable formulation comprises at least one of photosynthetic cells and photosynthetically active organisms thereof that deliver oxygen to the portion of the body.
