Abstract
Aircraft propulsion and torque mitigation technologies for aircraft are described. In embodiments, the disclosed technologies enable the provision of rotational torque for rotating the rotor blades of a vertical lift aircraft, while mitigating or even eliminating the need for counter torque methods and apparatuses such as tail rotors and counter rotating blades.
Claims17
An aircraft comprising:
- a fuselage;
- a support bearing coupled to the fuselage;
- a rotor shaft attached to the fuselage by the support bearing, wherein the rotor shaft can rotate about a first axis extending through the rotor shaft;
- a plurality of thrust support structures coupled to the rotor shaft, each of the plurality of thrust support structures including a ducting and a nozzle;
- and
- a plurality of engines, wherein one or more engines are coupled to each of the plurality of thrust support structures such that the plurality of engines rotate with the plurality of thrust support structures about the first axis and a thrust air flow generated by each of the plurality of engines flows through the ducting and exits the nozzle of each of the plurality of thrust support structures to cause the plurality of thrust support structures to rotate about the first axis;
- wherein at least a portion of an external surface of each of the plurality thrust support structures is configured to generate a majority of lift of the aircraft as the plurality of thrust support structures rotate about the first axis;
- and
- wherein each of the plurality of engines are disposed closer to the first axis than the nozzle of each of the plurality of thrust support structures.

An aircraft comprising:
- a fuselage;
- a support bearing coupled to the fuselage;
- a rotor shaft attached to the fuselage by the support bearing, wherein the rotor shaft can rotate about a first axis extending through the rotor shaft;
- a first and a second thrust support structure coupled to the rotor shaft, the first thrust support structure including a first ducting and a first nozzle and the second thrust support structure including a second ducting and a second nozzle;
- a first and a second engine, the first engine coupled to and rotating with the first thrust support structure and configured to generate a first thrust air flow that flows through the first ducting and exits the first nozzle to cause the first thrust support structure to rotate about the first axis, the second engine coupled to and rotating with the second thrust support structure and configured to generate a second thrust air flow that flows through the second ducting and exits the second nozzle to cause the second thrust support structure to rotate about the first axis;
- wherein a first portion of an external surface of the first thrust support structure located radially from the first axis beyond the first engine forms a first airfoil;
- wherein a second portion of an external surface of the second thrust support structure located radially from the first axis beyond the second engine forms a second airfoil;
- and
- wherein the first and the second engine are disposed closer to the first axis than the first and the second nozzle.
6 more elements
An aircraft propulsion system comprising:
- a rotor shaft configured to be rotatably attached to a fuselage about a first axis extending through the rotor shaft;
- a first thrust support structure coupled to the rotor shaft, the first thrust support structure including a first ducting extending radially away from the rotor shaft and including a first nozzle;
- a second thrust support structure coupled to the rotor shaft, the second thrust support structure including a second ducting extending radially away from the rotor shaft and including a second nozzle;
- a first engine coupled to a first proximal end of the first thrust support structure and configured to rotate about the first axis, the first engine configured to receive fuel and combust the fuel to generate a first thrust air flow that flows through the first ducting and exits the first nozzle to cause the first thrust support structure to rotate about the first axis;
- a second engine coupled to a second proximal end of the second thrust support structure and configured to rotate about the first axis, the second engine configured to receive fuel and combust the fuel to generate a second thrust air flow that flows through the second ducting and exits the second nozzle to cause the second thrust support structure to rotate about the first axis.
