Chipset attached random access memory

A system comprising:

• a processing unit package socket into which a processing unit package including a processing unit and a memory controller is installable;
• one or more system memory slots into which system memory, controllable by the memory controller, is installable;
• an input/output expander including a random access memory controller;
• a chipset link coupling the processing unit package socket to the input/output expander;
• and
• one or more chipset attached random access memory slots directly coupled to the input/output expander, the random access memory controller being configured to control a chipset attached random access memory installed in the one or more chipset attached random access memory slots, the chipset attached random access memory separate from the system memory.

A method comprising:

• executing, by a processing unit, an operating system of a device;
• receiving, at an input/output expander, access requests communicated from the processing unit to read data from a chipset attached random access memory directly coupled to the input/output expander, the access requests being separate from requests associated with the operating system, the chipset attached random access memory separate from a system memory of the device;
• reading, by a controller of the input/output expander, data from a chipset attached random access memory directly coupled to the input/output expander in accordance with the access requests;
• and
• responding, by the controller of the input/output expander, to the access requests based on the data read from the chipset attached random access memory.
