Abstract
A dry sprinkler is provided that includes a conduit with a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, a valve positioned near the fluid inlet and a fire sprinkler head that is positioned near the fluid outlet. The fire sprinkler head is operably connected to the valve by a tie. When the fire sprinkler head reacts to an elevated temperature condition, the tie is engaged and is operable to open the valve. In a normal state, before the fire sprinkler head reacts, the tie can be unbiased toward the fire sprinkler head. The tie can also be non-rigid and/or in a non-compressed state within the conduit. The conduit of the dry sprinkler can be flexible.
Claims8
A dry sprinkler comprising:
- a fluid conduit that (i) is configured to couple to a fluid supply and (ii) has a first end and a second end;
- a valve (a) having a valve opening and a sealing member, (b) positioned proximate to the first end of the fluid conduit and (c) configured to have (i) a closed state that prevents fluid from the fluid supply from flowing through the valve opening by engagement of the sealing member with the valve opening and (ii) an open state that allows fluid from the fluid supply to flow through the valve opening;
- a fire sprinkler head positioned proximate to the second end of the fluid conduit;
- and
- a tie (i) in the fluid conduit, (ii) being operably coupled at opposite ends of the tie to the fire sprinkler head and the valve, and (iii) being configured to have an unengaged state in which the tie does not transmit a force on the valve sufficient to release the valve to change from the closed state to the open state and an engaged state in which the tie applies a force on the valve toward the fire sprinkler head sufficient to release the valve to change from the closed state to the open state,
- wherein the fluid conduit, the valve, the fire sprinkler head and the tie are configured such that:
- the tie changes from the unengaged state to the engaged state when the fire sprinkler head is activated due to an elevated temperature condition;
- the valve is in the closed state when the tie is in the unengaged state;
- the valve is maintained in the closed state until the tie changes to the engaged state from the unengaged state and is not released to initially change to the open state from the closed state until the tie changes from the unengaged state to the engaged state;
- the tie is untensioned when the tie is in the unengaged state;
- changing the tie to the engaged state from the unengaged state releases the valve to change from the closed state to the open;
- and
- the sealing member remains in the fluid conduit after the valve has changed to the open state.
