Abstract
An air turbine starter that includes a housing defining an interior having a primary air flow path. A rotatable turbine member located in the interior includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced blades that extend into the primary air flow path. A containment assembly couples to the housing and circumscribes at least a portion of the plurality of circumferentially spaced blades. The containment assembly includes a first ring and a second ring, where the first ring and the second ring are secured together.
Claims18
An air turbine starter for a turbine engine, the air turbine starter comprising:
- a housing defining an interior, wherein the housing includes a primary inlet and a primary outlet to define a primary air flow path from the primary inlet to the primary outlet;
- a rotatable turbine member comprising a plurality of circumferentially spaced blades defining an axis of rotation and extending into the primary air flow path;
- an output shaft operably coupled to the rotatable turbine member by an output gear assembly, wherein the output shaft of the air turbine starter is selectively operably coupled to the turbine engine and rotates a portion of the turbine engine;
- and
- a containment assembly coupled to the housing, wherein at least an axial portion of the containment assembly is in contact with the housing, and wherein the containment assembly circumscribes at least a portion of the plurality of circumferentially spaced blades, the containment assembly comprising:
- a first ring having a first outer surface spaced from a first inner surface, and wherein a set of projections extend radially from the first inner surface of the first ring, wherein the first ring consists of a first material;
- and
- a second ring having a second outer surface spaced from a second inner surface, wherein the second ring is concentrically arranged with the first ring, wherein a set of recesses located at the second outer surface are geometrically complementary to the set of projections, the set of projections extending into the set of recesses such that the first ring and the second ring are in contact and mechanically interlocked, and wherein the second inner surface is a smooth surface, and wherein the second ring consists of a second material different than the first material;
- wherein a total thickness of the containment assembly is measured from the first outer surface to the second inner surface and the total thickness is between 0.5% and 30% of an outer diameter measured between two locations of the first outer surface of the first ring, wherein the measurement intercepts the axis of rotation.
An air turbine starter for a turbine engine, the air turbine starter comprising:
- a housing defining an interior, wherein the housing includes a primary inlet and a primary outlet to define a primary air flow path from the primary inlet to the primary outlet;
- a rotatable turbine member comprising a plurality of circumferentially spaced blades defining an axis of rotation and extending into the primary air flow path;
- an output shaft coupled to the rotatable turbine member by a gear assembly, wherein the output shaft is further operably coupled to the turbine engine such that the rotatable turbine member of the air turbine starter selectively rotates a portion of the turbine engine;
- and
- a containment assembly coupled to the housing, wherein at least an axial portion of the containment assembly is in contact with the housing, and wherein the containment assembly circumscribes at least a portion of the plurality of circumferentially spaced blades, the containment assembly comprising:
- a first annular ring consisting of a first material, wherein the first annular ring has a first inner surface and a first outer surface;
- a second annular ring consisting of a second material different than the first material, wherein the second annular ring concentrically arranged with the first annular ring, the second annular ring having a second inner surface and a second outer surface, wherein the second outer surface confronts the first inner surface, and the second inner surface is a smooth surface;
- a set of projections extending towards the axis of rotation from the first inner surface;
- a set of recesses defined by the second outer surface, wherein the set of recesses is complimentary to the set of projections;
- and
- a mechanical surface interlock securing together the first annular ring and the second annular ring, wherein the mechanical surface interlock is defined by at least the set of projections and the set of recesses;
- wherein a total thickness of the containment assembly is measured from the first outer surface to the second inner surface and the total thickness is between 0.5% and 30% of an outer diameter measured between two locations of the first outer surface of the first annular ring, wherein the measurement intercepts the axis of rotation.
