Abstract
The disclosed technology relates to a lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and an ashless basic amine additive selected from a secondary amine containing α-carbon aromatic substitution. The basic secondary amine additives used in the lubricating oils of the disclosed technology impart basicity measured as total base number (TBN) without adding sulfated ash. Lubricating oils containing the basic secondary amine additives of the disclosed technology simultaneously achieve seals compatibility, deposit, and corrosion control.
Claims29
A lubricant composition comprising:
- a) an oil of lubricating viscosity;
- and
- b) a secondary amine having a first α-carbon and a second α-carbon bonded to the amine nitrogen, wherein said first α-carbon comprises two aromatic substituents and said second α-carbon comprises one aromatic substituent and one hydrocarbyl substituent wherein said hydrocarbyl substituent is selected from C1 to C24 alkyl, or wherein said first α-carbon comprises two aromatic substituents and said second α-carbon comprises two hydrocarbyl substituents and no aromatic substituent, wherein said hydrocarbyl substituent is selected from C1 to C24 alkyl, or wherein said first α-carbon comprises one aromatic substituent and one hydrocarbyl substituent, and said second α-carbon comprises one aromatic substituent and no hydrocarbyl substituent, wherein said hydrocarbyl substituent is selected from C1 to C24 alkyl, or wherein said first α-carbon comprises one aromatic substituent and one hydrocarbyl substituent and said second α-carbon comprises one aromatic substituent and one hydrocarbyl substituent, wherein said hydrocarbyl substituent is selected from C1 to C24 alkyl, and wherein at least one of said aromatic substituents is substituted with a substituent selected from C1-C10 alkyl, C2-C10 alkenyl, amino, hydroxyl, hydroxy substituted C1-C10 alkyl, C1-C10 alkoxy, and combinations thereof.
