A glass material less likely to cause inconveniences, such as crystallization and the generation of devitrified matters, while holding desired optical properties, has a refractive index of 1.8 or more and a content of Al2O3 of over 0 to 500 mass ppm.

A glass material having a refractive index of 1.8 or more, a content of Al2O3 of over 0 to 500 mass ppm, and containing, in terms of % by mole, 19.99 to 70% La2O3 and 5 to 70% Nb2O5.
