Abstract
A fail-safe release mechanism for use with patient positioning support apparati having a base structure and a patient support structure, to prevent collapse of the patient support during disconnection of the patient support structure from the base structure.
Claims20
A patient positioning apparatus comprising:
- a base;
- a connection assembly;
- a patient support removably attached to the base by the connection assembly;
- a first lock engaged with the base and the connection assembly to couple the connection assembly with the base;
- and
- a second lock engaged with the connection assembly and the patient support to couple the connection assembly with the patient support,
- wherein engagement of the second lock substantially blocks disengagement of the first lock.

A patient positioning apparatus comprising:
- a base;
- a connection assembly comprising a first member and a second member slidably coupled to the first member, the first member comprising first and second apertures, the second member comprising a notch and a bore;
- a patient support removably attached to the base by the connection assembly;
- a first lock engaged with the base and the connection assembly such that the first lock extends through the first aperture and the notch;
- and
- a second lock engaged with the connection assembly and the patient support such that the second lock extends through the second aperture and the bore,
- wherein engagement of the second lock substantially blocks disengagement of the first attachment lock.

A patient positioning apparatus comprising:
- a base;
- a connection assembly comprising a first member and a second member slidably coupled to the first member, the first member comprising first and second apertures, the second member comprising a notch and a bore;
- a patient support removably attached to the base by the connection assembly;
- a first lock configured to be engaged with the base and the connection assembly such that the first lock extends through the first aperture and the notch;
- and
- a second lock configured to be engaged with the connection assembly and the patient support such that the second lock extends through the second aperture and the bore,
- wherein the apparatus is movable between a first orientation in which the first lock extends through the first aperture and the notch and the second lock is spaced apart from the second aperture and the bore such that the first lock is removable from the first aperture and the notch and a second orientation in which the first lock extends through the first aperture and the notch and the second lock extends the second aperture and the bore such that the first lock is prevented from being removed from the first aperture and the notch.
