Abstract
This invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising or resulting from the admixing of: base oil, detergent, and one or more metal alkanoates having a quaternary carbon atom at the 2 position, the 2′ position, or both the 2 and 2′ positions, where the lubricating composition preferably has an adhesive wear of 100 hours or more, a foam volume of 70 ml or less at 24° C., and 50 ml or less at 93.5° C., and, optionally, a total base number of 7 mgKOH/g or more.
Claims18
A lubricating composition comprising or resulting from the admixing of:
- base oil at from 70 to 85 wt. %, detergent at from 0.5 to 2.3 wt. % selected from the group consisting of calcium sulfonate, magnesium sulfonate, calcium phenate and combinations thereof, zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate at from 0.64 wt. % to 1.0 wt. % to contribute from 500 to 800 ppm phosphorous to the lubricating composition, and zinc neodecanoate at from 0.5 wt. % to 3.0 wt. %, wherein the lubricating composition has a zinc to phosphorous ratio ranging from 3.0 to 3.5 by wt. %, and where the lubricating composition has:
- an adhesive wear of 100 hours or more, as determined by ASTM D8074-16, and optionally a total base number of 7 mgKOH/g or more.
A method of lubricating an internal combustion engine during operation of the engine comprising:
- (i) providing to a crankcase of the internal combustion engine a lubricating composition comprising base oil at from 70 to 85 wt. %;
- detergent at from 0.5 to 2.3 wt. % selected from the group consisting of calcium sulfonate, magnesium sulfonate, calcium phenate and combinations thereof;
- zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate at from 0.64 wt. % to 1.0 wt. % to contribute from 500 to 800 ppm phosphorous to the lubricating composition;
- and zinc neodecanoate at from 0.5 wt. % to 3.0 wt. %;
- (ii) providing a hydrocarbon fuel in the internal combustion engine;
- (iii) combusting the fuel in the internal combustion engine;
- (iv) obtaining an adhesive wear of 100 hours or more, as determined by ASTM D8074-16, in the internal combustion engine lubricated by the composition;
- and
- (v) wherein the lubricating composition has a zinc to phosphorous ratio ranging from 3.0 to 3.5 by wt. %, and a total base number of 7 mgKOH/g or more.
A method of lubricating a hydrogen and or ammonia fueled internal combustion engine during operation of the engine comprising:
- (i) providing to a crankcase of the internal combustion engine a lubricating composition comprising base oil at from 70 to 85 wt. %, detergent at from 0.5 to 2.3 wt. % selected from the group consisting of calcium sulfonate, magnesium sulfonate, calcium phenate and combinations thereof;
- zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate at from 0.64 wt. % to 1.0 wt. % to contribute from 500 to 800 ppm phosphorous to the lubricating composition;
- and zinc neodecanoate at from 0.5 wt. % to 3.0 wt. %;
- (ii) providing fuel comprising hydrogen and or ammonia in the internal combustion engine;
- and
- (iii) combusting the fuel in the internal combustion engine;
- and
- wherein the lubricating composition has a zinc to phosphorous ratio ranging from 3.0 to 3.5 by wt. %, an adhesive wear of 100 hours or more, as determined by ASTM D8074-16, and a total base number of 7 mgKOH/g or more.
