Abstract
Disclosed are methods for polypropylene decomposition. Also disclosed are products obtained from the decomposition polypropylene including carboxylic acids, dicarboxylic acids, nitro-substituted carboxylic acids and dicarboxylic acids; as well as the salts, esters, and anhydrides thereof.
Claims21
A method for decomposing polypropylene (PP) waste, comprising:
- a. adding PP waste to a reaction vessel;
- b. adding at least one oxidizing agent to the reaction vessel to give a mixture;
- c. subjecting the mixture obtained in b⋅ to conditions effective to decompose the PP waste to produce a decomposition mixture, wherein the decomposition mixture comprises at least one dicarboxylic acid optionally substituted by a nitro group;
- or the salts or esters or anhydrides thereof;
- and
- d. converting the at least one dicarboxylic acid into at least one corresponding ester.
