Abstract
The invention primarily relates to fastening and stabilizing tissues, implants, and/or bondable materials, such as the fastening of a tissue and/or implant to a bondable material, the fastening of an implant to tissue, and/or the fastening of an implant to another implant. This may involve using an energy source to bond and/or mechanically to stabilize a tissue, an implant, a bondable material, and/or other biocompatible material. The invention may also relate to the use of an energy source to remove and/or install an implant and/or bondable material or to facilitate solidification and/or polymerization of bondable material.

A vibratory energy system for bonding a first component to a second component, comprising:
- a hand-held instrument comprising:
- a proximal end configured to couple to an energy source to enable the hand-held instrument to receive energy from the energy source;
- a vibratory energy generator configured to generate mechanical vibratory energy from the energy received from the energy source and to control application of the mechanical vibratory energy;
- a force regulating mechanism configured to control application of force applied by the vibratory energy generator;
- a sensor configured to measure at least one of force or pressure applied by the vibratory energy generator during the bonding of the first component to the second component;
- a housing enclosing the vibratory energy generator, the force regulating mechanism, and the sensor, the housing having an external gripping surface for a human hand;
- and
- a switch coupled to the housing and operatively connected to the vibratory energy generator, the switch configured to activate the vibratory energy generator;
- and
- an end effector configured to attach to a distal end of the hand-held instrument and operatively connected to the vibratory energy generator, wherein the end effector is configured to contact the first component;
- and
- an indicator operatively connected with the sensor and configured to provide one or more of a visual indication of the bonding or an audible indication of the bonding based on the at least one of force or pressure measured by the sensor during the bonding of the first component to the second component,
- wherein during contact of the first component with the second component, the hand-held instrument is operable to apply the mechanical vibratory energy from the vibratory energy generator through the end effector to the first component to bond the first component to the second component.
A vibratory energy system for bonding a first component to a second component, comprising:
- an energy source;
- a user interface coupled to the energy source;
- and
- a hand-held instrument comprising:
- a proximal end configured to couple to the energy source to enable the hand-held instrument to receive energy from the energy source;
- a vibratory energy generator configured to generate mechanical vibratory energy from the energy received from the energy source and to control application of the mechanical vibratory energy;
- a force regulating mechanism configured to control force applied by the hand-held instrument;
- a sensor configured to measure at least one of force or pressure applied by the hand-held instrument during the bonding of the first component to the second component;
- a housing enclosing the vibratory energy generator, the force regulating mechanism, and the sensor, the housing having an external gripping surface for a human hand;
- and
- a switch coupled to the housing and operatively connected to the vibratory energy generator, the switch configured to activate the vibratory energy generator;
- and
- an end effector configured to attach to a distal end of the hand-held instrument and operatively connected to the vibratory energy generator, wherein the end effector is configured to contact the first component;
A vibratory energy system for bonding two or more materials, comprising:
- an energy source;
- a hand-held vibratory energy application device comprising a housing having an external surface configured to be held by a human hand, the vibratory energy application device coupled to the energy source and comprising a vibratory energy generator configured to generate mechanical vibratory energy, wherein the vibratory energy generator is enclosed within the housing;
- a switch coupled to the hand-held vibratory energy application device and configured to control activation of the mechanical vibratory energy for the bonding of the two or more materials;
- a second control mechanism incorporated into the hand-held vibratory energy application device and configured to control a force transmitted by the hand-held vibratory energy application device;
- and
- at least one of a force sensor or a pressure sensor configured to output one or more signals indicative of at least one of the force or the pressure applied by the hand-held vibratory application device during the bonding between the two or more materials;
- and
- an indicator operatively connected with the sensor and configured to provide one or more of a visual indication of the bonding or an audible indication of the bonding based on the at least one of force or pressure measured by the sensor during the bonding between the two or more materials.
