Abstract
Systems and methods for producing green hydrogen from a source material (e.g., biowaste) are contemplated. The source material is at least partially dehydrated to produce a dried intermediate and recovered water. The dried intermediate is pyrolyzed to produce syngas and a char. The recovered water is electrolyzed to produce oxygen and green hydrogen.
Claims14
A method of producing electricity, green hydrogen and clean water from sewage sludge, comprising:
- using a dryer to partially dehydrate the sewage sludge:
- (a) receive moist hot air from the partial dehydrating of the sewage sludge;
- (b) produce a dried intermediate from the partial dehydrating of the sewage sludge;
- and
- (c) produce a dried hot air stream and, using a condenser, produce recovered water from the moist hot air, wherein the dried hot air stream used to further dry the sewage sludge, and wherein the recovered water is clean water;
- electrolyzing, using an electrolyzer, a first portion of the recovered water to produce oxygen and the green hydrogen;
- feeding a second portion of the recovered water to a hybrid chiller to be used as a cooling stream for the condenser;
- feeding the dried intermediate to at least one thermal convertor via an airlock mechanism. wherein the airlock mechanism ensures the at least one convertor remains oxygen-free for pyrolysis;
- pyrolyzing the dried intermediate to produce a syngas and a char, wherein the step of pyrolyzing occurs within a temperature range and residence time that decomposes Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) compounds;
- combusting at least some of the syngas to operate a turbine;
- operating the turbine to run a generator to produce the electricity;
- and
- recovering waste heat from the turbine to use in drying the sewage sludge.

A system for producing electricity, green hydrogen from a biowaste, comprising:
- a dryer configured to use a dried hot air stream to dry the biowaste, and produce a moist hot air stream and a dried biowaste;
- the dryer further configured to produce the dried hot air stream and a condenser to produce condensate water from the moist hot air stream, wherein the condensate water comprises clean water;
- an electrolyzer configured to electrolyze a first portion of the condensate water to produce oxygen and the green hydrogen;
- a hybrid chiller configured to receive a second portion of the condensate water for use as a cooling stream for the condenser;
- a pyrolyzer configured to pyrolyze the dried biowaste to produce a syngas and a char;
- an airlock mechanism configured to feed the dried biowaste into the pyrolyzer;
- a turbine and generator configured to utilize the syngas to produce electricity, wherein the turbine produces waste heat;
- and
- a line configured to provide the waste heat to the dryer.
