Metal-glass macrocomposites and compositions and methods of making

A method of forming a macrocomposite comprising:

• dispersing or immersing a metal in a glass, wherein the metal has a volume of greater than 0.1 mm3;
• wherein the glass has a composition selected from Composition 1 and Composition 2:

• wherein the metal comprises at least one of copper, an aluminum bronze alloy, a copper alloy, bronze, iron, cast iron, steel, carbon steel, or titanium,
• wherein when the metal comprises at least one of copper, an aluminum bronze alloy, or a copper alloy, the glass has a thermal expansion coefficient in a range of 130×10−7K−1 to 185×10−7K−1,
• wherein when the metal comprises bronze, the glass has a thermal expansion coefficient in a range of 160×10−7K−1 to 185×10−7K−1;
• wherein when the metal comprises at least one of iron, cast iron, steel, or carbon steel, the glass has a thermal expansion coefficient in a range of 90×10−7K−1 to 140×10−7K−1;
• wherein when the metal comprises titanium, the glass has a thermal expansion coefficient in a range of 75×10−7K−1 to 105×10−7K−1,
• wherein the difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion between the metal and the glass is less than 30×10−7K−1, and
• wherein the macrocomposite does not comprise an organic resin, an adhesive, or a polymer.
