Abstract
The present invention is silver (I) periodate compounds and their use in preventing or reducing microbial contamination. The invention includes gels, coatings, and articles of manufacture having a surface contacted or coated with a gel comprising an antimicrobial silver (I) compound. Methods of treatment are also disclosed.
Claims25
An article of manufacture comprising one or more antiviral compounds that release an anion of 3− charge containing both silver and orthoperiodate, with the antiviral compound selected from the group consisting of:
- pentasilver hexaoxoiodate (formula, Ag5IO6);
- Ag2H3IO6;
- AgxHyIO6, where x is a value between 1 and 5, and y is the corresponding value between 0 and 4 necessary to achieve the correct total positive charge of 5;
- AgxMyIO6, where x is a value between 1 and 5, y is a corresponding value between 0 and 4 necessary to achieve the correct total positive charge of 5, and M is a cation, including one or more metals or hydrogen and any combinations thereof;
- and combinations thereof, excluding compounds containing silver of a valency greater than 1.
A method of making a surface or substrate antiviral comprising forming or incorporating into or coating the surface or substrate with one or more antiviral compounds that release an anion of 3− charge containing both silver and orthoperiodate, with the one or more antiviral compounds selected from the group consisting of:
- pentasilver hexaoxoiodate (formula, Ag5IO6);
- Ag2H3IO6;
- AgxHyIO6, where x is a value between 1 and 5, and y is a corresponding value between 0 and 4 necessary to achieve the correct total positive charge of 5;
- AgxMyIO6, where x is a value between 1 and 5, y is a corresponding value between 0 and 4 necessary to achieve the correct total positive charge of 5, and M is a cation, including one or more metals or hydrogen and any combinations thereof;
- and combinations thereof, excluding compounds containing silver of a valency greater than 1.
A method of preventing, treating, or reducing viral contamination on a substrate, comprising contacting a substrate or virus with one or more antiviral compounds that release an anion of 3− charge containing both silver and orthoperiodate, with the one or more antiviral compounds selected from the group consisting of:
- pentasilver hexaoxoiodate (formula, Ag5IO6);
- Ag2H3IO6;
- AgxHyIO6, where x is a value between 1 and 5, and y is the corresponding value between 0 and 4 necessary to achieve the correct total positive charge of 5;
- AgxMyIO6, where x is a value between 1 and 5, y is the corresponding value between 0 and 4 necessary to achieve the correct total positive charge of 5, and M is a cation, including one or more metals or hydrogen and any combinations thereof;
- and combinations thereof, excluding compounds containing silver of a valency greater than 1.
