Abstract
Extruded starch compositions and methods for their preparation are provided. The compositions possess a high degree of cook which imparts particular viscosity characteristics. The compositions may be formed into films having advantageous properties such as low haze, high strength and high gas barrier. The starch compositions find use in a wide range of applications, particularly, but not exclusively, in the manufacture of thin films for packaging.
Claims17
An extruded starch composition comprising:
- at least one starch, chemically modified starch, or mixtures thereof;
- one or more water soluble polymers;
- and
- optionally, water, with the starch composition being free of a polyol plasticizer, wherein
- the one or more water soluble polymers are selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyalkylene oxide having a molecular weight of at least 10,000 Da, or mixtures thereof,
- the extruded starch composition has a peak cold viscosity of greater than about 700 mPa·s,
- a final viscosity greater than about 300 mPa·s, and a ratio of the peak cold viscosity to the final viscosity of greater than or equal to about 1.0.
