Abstract
Disclosed are films and materials comprising poly(alkylene glycol)-chitosan and/or chitin-poly(glucuronic acid) and chitosan and/or chitin-poly(glucuronic acid). Methods of making such films, particularly involving thermally crosslinking poly(glucuronic acid) with chitosan, are disclosed.

A method of making a poly(alkylene glycol)-chitosan-poly(glucuronic acid) film;
- comprising:
- contacting cellulose with NaOH and poly(alkylene glycol) to form a solution comprising poly(alkylene glycol), NaOH and cellulose;
- contacting the solution comprising poly(alkylene glycol) and cellulose with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical and an oxidizing reagent to form a solution comprising poly(glucuronic acid) and poly(alkylene glycol);
- separating any 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical, oxidizing reagent, and cellulose from the solution comprising poly(glucuronic acid) and poly(alkylene glycol);
- contacting the solution comprising poly(glucuronic acid) and poly(alkylene glycol) with an acidic solution of chitosan to form a solution comprising chitosan, poly(glucuronic acid), and poly(alkylene glycol);
- casting or coating the solution comprising chitosan, poly(glucuronic acid), and poly(alkylene glycol) into a film;
- and
- heating the film to crosslink the poly(glucuronic acid) with the chitosan and yield a poly(alkylene glycol)-chitosan-poly(glucuronic acid) film.
