Abstract
An impeller, for example, a Rushton impeller for a bioreactor system is disclosed. The impeller includes a hub, optionally including a slot, a plurality of blades, and one or more turbulators. The plurality of blades is disposed along a circumferential direction of the hub and spaced apart from each other. Each of the plurality of blades is coupled to at least a portion of a circumference and/or a top surface of the hub. Each blade of the plurality of blades includes a pressure face and a suction face. The one or more turbulators is disposed on at least a portion of the suction face, the pressure face, or both, of a blade of the plurality of blades.
Claims15
An impeller for use with a bioreactor system having a culture vessel that cultures cells from cell culture media, the impeller comprising:
- a shaft;
- a hub that receives the shaft;
- a plurality of blades disposed along a circumferential direction of the hub and spaced apart from each other in a fixed position in relation to the hub, wherein each of the plurality of blades is fixedly coupled to at least a portion of a circumference and/or a top surface of the hub, wherein each blade of the plurality of blades comprises a pressure face and a suction face, wherein the plurality of blades are configured to rotate about the shaft;
- and
- one or more turbulators disposed on at least a portion of the suction face, the pressure face, or both, of at least one blade of the plurality of blades, wherein the one or more turbulators includes at least one groove coupled to the at least one blade, wherein the one or more turbulators is configured to rotate with the at least one blade about the shaft, wherein the at least one groove extends inward in the at least one blade to form a depression therein that is bounded with sidewalls and a bottom wall formed from an interior portion of the at least one blade, wherein the at least one groove is configured to have fluid communication with the cell culture media in the culture vessel, wherein the at least one groove is configured to generate eddies of cell culture media from the cell culture media received therein.
An impeller for use with a bioreactor system having a culture vessel that cultures cells from cell culture media, the impeller comprising:
- a hub;
- a plurality of blades disposed along a circumferential direction of the hub and spaced apart from each other in a fixed position in relation to the hub, wherein each of the plurality of blades is fixedly coupled to at least a portion of a circumference and/or a top surface of the hub, wherein each blade of the plurality of blades comprises a pressure face and a suction face;
- and
- one or more turbulators disposed on at least a portion of the suction face, the pressure face, or both, of at least one blade of the plurality of blades, wherein the one or more turbulators includes an array of grooves disposed on the suction face of the at least one blade, wherein each of the grooves in the array is defined entirely within a continuous outer surface of the at least one blade, wherein each of the grooves is configured to have fluid communication with the cell culture media in the culture vessel, wherein the each of the grooves is configured to generate eddies of cell culture media from the cell culture media received therein.
An impeller for use with a bioreactor system having a culture vessel that cultures cells from cell culture media, the impeller comprising:
- a shaft;
- a hub that receives the shaft;
- a plurality of blades disposed along a circumferential direction of the hub and spaced apart from each other in a fixed position in relation to the hub, wherein each of the plurality of blades is fixedly coupled to at least a portion of a circumference and/or a top surface of the hub, wherein each blade of the plurality of blades comprises a pressure face and a suction face, wherein the plurality of blades are configured to rotate about the shaft;
- and
- one or more turbulators disposed on at least a portion of the suction face, the pressure face, or both, of at least one blade of the plurality of blades, wherein the one or more turbulators is configured to rotate with the at least one blade about the shaft, wherein the one or more turbulators includes a rib having a corrugated surface coupled to the at least one blade.
