A human or animal food supplement comprising a lignin fraction as an anti-pathogenic agent against infections ascribable to food pathogens, wherein said lignin fraction includes a single species, the single species is Fagus sylvatic and contains synapyl alcohol units, said lignin fraction is depolymerized, said lignin fraction comprises fragments having a weight average molecular weight up to 2,500 Daltons, as measured by Size-Exclusion Chromatography, and said fragments comprising up to 13 phenylpropane units on weight average.
