Abstract
A spring energized fastening tool with compact, rigid, low friction working elements is disclosed. A torsion power spring includes forward extending arms with the arms pressing each other proximate a front distal end of the spring. A cantilevered lever links to a handle and engages the spring adjacent to the striker. A bottom loading staple track unlatches and opens through a simple pulling-out action. Structures are provided to enable fitment with a formed sheet metal handle and housing. The fastening tool is particularly simple to assemble, powerful, and of low operating effort.
Claims20
A fastening tool used to install staples of a rack of staples, comprising:
- a housing with a top, bottom and sides, the housing extending longitudinally between a front and a rear;
- a track chamber disposed along the bottom of the housing, the track chamber open to a bottom of the fastening tool;
- a track slidably fitted within the track chamber;
- a striker disposed at the front of the housing including an upper striker position above the track and a lower striker position in front of the track;
- the track including a closed operative track position and an open track position, the track being selectively latched to be retained in the closed operative track position, a track latch biasing the track to be latched, and the track extending rearward from the housing in the open track position;
- the track further including a track channel, the track channel being elongated and having side walls of the track, the track channel being open toward a top of the fastening tool, wherein the track channel is enclosed at a bottom of the track channel and includes an open top of the track channel;
- the track chamber configured to fit the elongated track channel and the rack of staples within the track chamber, wherein the track chamber provides for bottom loading of the rack of staples into an open bottom of the track chamber;
- and
- a track tab extending outward from at least one track wall at a top of the track, the track tab being exposed at the top of the track to a rear of the housing in the open track position, wherein the rack of staples, when present, cannot operatively fit upon the track at a location of the track tab.
A fastening tool used to install staples of a rack of staples, comprising:
- a housing having upper and lower portions and sides, wherein the housing extends longitudinally between a front and a rear;
- a track chamber disposed along the lower portion of the housing, the track chamber being open to a bottom of the fastening tool;
- a track slidably fitted within the track chamber;
- a striker disposed at the front of the housing including an upper striker position above the track and a lower striker position in front of the track;
- the track including a closed operative track position and an open track position, the track being selectively latched to be retained in the closed operative track position, a track latch biasing the track to be latched, and the track extending rearward from the housing in the open track position;
- the track further including an track channel, the track channel being elongated and having walls of the track, the track channel being open toward a top of the fastening tool, wherein the track channel is enclosed at a bottom of the track and open at a top of the track;
- track feet extending outward from the track channel at a bottom of the track channel, the track feet being near a front of the track channel, and sides of the track chamber guide the track feet;
- the track chamber configured to receive the elongated track channel and the rack of staples within a staple channel of the track chamber, wherein the track chamber provides for bottom loading of the rack of staples, forward of the track, into an open bottom of the track chamber when the track is in the open track position;
- the lower portion of the housing including a rear most end, the rear most end includes a track opening through which the track slides between the closed operative track position and the open track position;
- and
- a blocking tab of the track opening extends to be adjacent to the track, the blocking tab being configured to constrict the track opening against passage of the rack of staples through the track opening when the track is in the open track position.
A fastening tool used to install staples of a rack of staples, comprising:
- a housing with a top, bottom, and sides, wherein the housing extends longitudinally between a front and a rear;
- a subassembly disposed along the bottom of the housing, the subassembly including a track, a track pull, and a pusher;
- a striker disposed at the front of the housing including an upper striker position above the track and a lower striker position in front of the track;
- the track including a closed track operative position and an open track position, the track being selectively latched to be retained in the closed track operative position, a track latch biasing the track to be latched, and the track extending rearward from the housing in the open track position;
- a track pull attached to a rear of the track, wherein operating the track pull causes the track to de-latch the track from the closed track operative position to a track de-latched position;
- wherein the track is movable horizontally rearward from the track de-latched position to the open track position;
- and wherein the track includes wall portions of a track channel, and a track tab extends outward from a top of the wall portion at a track tab wherein the rack of staples cannot fit upon the track channel at a location of the track tab;
- and
- track feet that extend outward from the track channel near a front of the track channel, and sides of a track chamber guide the track feet.
