Abstract
Hemofilters for in vivo filtration of blood are disclosed. The hemofilters disclosed herein provide an optimal flow of blood through the filtration channels while maintaining a pressure gradient across the filtration channel walls to enhance filtration and minimize turbulence and stagnation of blood in the hemofilter.
Claims17
A hemofilter for use in filtering blood in vivo, the hemofilter comprising:
- a housing comprising an inlet and an outlet;
- an inlet conduit connected to the inlet, wherein the inlet conduit comprises a circular cross section geometry at a first region proximal to the inlet and transitioning into a rectangular cross section geometry at a second region distal to the first region, and a curved region having a rectangular cross section geometry connected to the second distal region;
- a single serpentine filtration channel connected to the curved region comprising a plurality of filtration sections arranged in a spaced-apart stacked configuration wherein the plurality of filtration sections are connected via turnaround sections;
- and
- an outlet conduit connected to the outlet, wherein the outlet conduit comprises a rectangular cross-section geometry at a first region distal to the outlet and transitioning into a circular cross section geometry at a second region proximal to the outlet.
