Abstract
According to examples, a substrate may be moved through a magnetic field, in which the substrate includes a fluid carrier containing magnetically-orientable flakes. The magnetic field may influence the magnetically-orientable flakes to be respectively oriented in one of multiple orientations. In addition, during movement of the substrate through the magnetic field, radiation may be applied onto a plurality of selected portions of the fluid carrier through at least one opening in a mask to cure the fluid carrier at the plurality of selected portions and fix the magnetically-orientable flakes in the plurality of selected portions at the respective angular orientations as influenced by the magnetic field.
Claims7
An optical element, comprising:
- a coating provided on a first region of a substrate, the coating comprising a cured fluid carrier in which magnetically-orientable flakes are oriented with a first dihedral angle along a first direction of the substrate;
- and
- wherein the coating is further provided on a second region of the substrate, the coating comprising the cured fluid carrier in which magnetically-orientable flakes are oriented with a second dihedral angle along the first direction of the substrate;
- wherein the second dihedral angle is greater than the first dihedral angle and forms a helical configuration along a second direction of the substrate orthogonal to the first direction of the substrate;
- wherein the magnetically-orientable flakes are arranged in a plurality of columns and oriented in a step-wise dihedral angle with respect to a major plane of the substrate to form the helical configuration;
- and
- wherein each column of the plurality of columns has the same helical configuration.
