Abstract
An optical reflective device referred to as a skew mirror, having a reflective axis that need not be constrained to surface normal, is described. Examples of skew mirrors are configured to reflect light about a constant reflective axis across a relatively wide range of wavelengths. In some examples, a skew mirror has a constant reflective axis across a relatively wide range of angles of incidence. Exemplary methods for making and using skew minors are also disclosed. Skew mirrors include a grating structure, which in some examples comprises a hologram.
Claims20
A display system comprising:
- a grating medium;
- and
- a grating structure in the grating medium, wherein
- first incident light is incident upon a specific site on the grating medium at a first internal angle of incidence relative to a surface normal of the grating medium,
- second incident light is incident upon the specific site at a second internal angle of incidence relative to the surface normal,
- the grating structure is configured to reflect the first incident light as first reflected light, the first reflected light being separated from the first incident light by a first angle that is bisected by a first reflective axis, and the first reflective axis being oriented at a first reflective axis angle relative to the surface normal,
- the grating structure is configured to reflect the second incident light as second reflected light, the second reflected light being separated from the second incident light by a second angle that is bisected by a second reflective axis, and the second reflective axis being oriented at a second reflective axis angle relative to the surface normal, and
- the first reflective axis angle and the second reflective axis angle are each non-zero relative to the surface normal, wherein the display system is integrated into a head mounted display device.
A display system comprising:
- a waveguide;
- a grating medium on the waveguide;
- a diffractive grating structure in the grating medium;
- and
- optical components configured to direct first light onto a location of the grating medium at a first internal angle of incidence relative to a surface normal of the grating medium and configured to direct second light onto the location of the grating medium at a second internal angle of incidence relative to the surface normal, wherein
- the diffractive grating structure is configured to diffract the first light onto a first internal angle of reflection, the first internal angle of incidence and the first internal angle of reflection being bisected by a first reflective axis that is oriented at a first reflective axis angle relative to the surface normal,
- the diffractive grating structure is configured to diffract the second light onto a second internal angle of reflection, the second internal angle of incidence and the second internal angle of reflection being bisected by a second reflective axis that is oriented at a second reflective axis angle relative to the surface normal, and
- the first and second reflective axis angles are each non-zero relative to the surface normal.
A display system comprising:
- a waveguide configured to propagate light via total internal reflection;
- a grating medium on the waveguide;
- and
- a grating structure on the grating medium, wherein
- the grating structure comprises at least four volume holograms that are overlapping at a specific site of the grating medium, the light being incident upon the specific site of the grating medium,
- the at least four volume holograms are configured to reflect, out of the waveguide, the light incident upon the specific site of the grating medium,
- a first volume hologram of the at least four volume holograms has a first reflective axis oriented at a first non-zero reflective axis angle relative to a surface normal of the grating medium, and
- a second volume hologram of the at least four volume holograms has a second reflective axis oriented at a second non-zero reflective axis angle relative to the surface normal of the grating medium.
