Abstract
A method is used to manufacture a knife of an end effector of a surgical instrument. The method includes forming the knife using metal injection molding. The knife has at least one feature having a molded shape. The method also includes machining the at least one feature of the knife to have a machined shape without machining the entire knife. The method also includes incorporating the knife into the end effector of the surgical instrument.
Claims20
An instrument, comprising:
- (a) a shaft extending distally along a longitudinal axis;
- and
- (b) an end effector in communication with the shaft, wherein the end effector is operable to compress, staple, and cut tissue, wherein the end effector comprises:
- (i) a first jaw including a recess configured to receive a staple cartridge,
- (ii) a second jaw including an anvil, and
- (iii) a knife, wherein the knife comprises:
- (A) a cutting edge including first and second opposing sides,
- (B) an anvil pin configured to move within a recess of the anvil, wherein the anvil pin includes inner and outer surfaces, wherein the inner surface of the anvil pin is disposed closer to the cutting edge than the outer surface of the anvil pin, wherein at least the inner surface of the anvil pin has a machined surface finish that is finer than a remainder of the anvil pin which is configured to tighten dimensional tolerances and minimize wear associated with slidably interacting with the anvil, and
- (C) a channel pin configured to move within the recess of the first jaw, wherein the channel pin includes inner and outer surfaces, wherein the inner surface of the channel pin includes a pair of raised surface portions and a recessed surface portion positioned between the raised surface portions, wherein the inner surface of the channel pin is disposed closer to the cutting edge than the outer surface of the channel pin, wherein at least one of the inner or outer surfaces of the channel pin has a machined surface finish that is finer than a remainder of the channel pin which is configured to tighten dimensional tolerances and minimize wear associated with slidably interacting with the recess of the first jaw.

An instrument, comprising:
- (a) a shaft extending distally along a longitudinal axis;
- and
- (b) an end effector in communication with the shaft, wherein the end effector is operable to compress, staple, and cut tissue, wherein the end effector comprises:
- (i) a first jaw that includes a stapling assembly,
- (ii) a second jaw that includes an anvil, and
- (iii) a knife, wherein at least a portion of the knife has a first surface finish, wherein the knife comprises:
- (A) a cutting edge,
- (B) a first pin configured to interact with the anvil, wherein at least a portion of the first pin has a machined surface finish that is finer than the first surface finish, wherein the first pin includes an outer upper surface and a lower surface, wherein each of the upper surface and the lower surface is upwardly facing, wherein the upper surface is above the lower surface, wherein each of the outer upper surface and the lower surface has a machined surface finish configured to tighten dimensional tolerances of the outer upper surface and the lower surface, and
- (C) a second pin that includes upper and lower surfaces, wherein the upper surface of the second pin includes a pair of raised surface portions and a recessed surface portion positioned between the raised surface portions, wherein at least one of the upper or lower surfaces of the second pin has a machined surface finish that is finer than a remainder of the second pin which is configured to minimize wear associated with slidably interacting the stapling assembly.
