Abstract
A process for the separation of electrolyte from the carbon in a solid carbon/electrolyte cathode product formed at the cathode during molten carbonate electrolysis. The processes allow for easy separation of the solid carbon product from the electrolyte without any observed detrimental effect on the structure and/or stability of the resulting solid carbon nanomaterial.
Claims25
A system comprising:
- an extraction chamber having an interior space;
- a divider plate extending transversely across the extraction chamber at the interior space, said divider plate having through-holes and a top surface;
- one or more filters with porous openings each with a diameter between 10 μm and 10 mm, the one or more filters are positioned directly on the top surface of said divider plate, said one or more filters are configured to receive a raw product including a nanomaterial and a liquid material;
- a lid configured to compress the raw product against the one or more filters with a force of gravity applied to the lid;
- a collector chamber positioned below the divider plate;
- and
- a source of an oxygen-excluding gas that is in fluid communication with the extraction chamber, the collector chamber or both for delivering oxygen-excluding gas thereto;
- wherein the one or more filters are configured to separate the nanomaterial from the liquid material, and the collector chamber is configured to receive the liquid material passing through said one or more filters and said divider plate;
- the system further comprising an outer housing, in which the extraction chamber and the collector chamber are positioned, wherein the oxygen-excluding gas is introduced into the outer housing, and wherein the extraction chamber, the divider plate, the one or more filters, the lid and the collection chamber are made of materials that can withstand a temperature between about 700° C. and about 900° C.
