Abstract
Described herein are apparatuses and methods for measuring a hydration condition with a wearable device. The wearable device may include a housing, a flume integrated into inro the housing, and a sensor array. The housing may include a perimeter wall disposed around a perimeter of the housing between a top wall and a bottom wall, where the top wall, bottom wall, and perimeter wall form an inner cavity. The flume may be disposed in the inner cavity, where a first end of the flume is disposed at the bottom wall and a second end of the flume is disposed at the top wall. The sensor array may include a first vapor pressure sensor located within the flume at a first location and a second vapor pressure sensor located within the flume at a second location.

A device, comprising:
- a housing comprising a perimeter wall disposed around a perimeter of the housing between a top wall and a bottom wall, wherein the top wall, the bottom wall, and the perimeter wall form an inner cavity;
- a flume extending across the inner cavity from the bottom wall to the top wall, wherein:
- a first opening of the flume is disposed at the bottom wall;
- a second opening of the flume disposed at the top wall;
- the flume is formed in a non-linear shape, the non-linear shape comprising:
- a first section extending from the first opening, wherein a length of the first section runs perpendicular to the bottom wall;
- a second extending from the first section at an opposite end of the first section from the first opening, wherein a length of the second section intersects at a first angle with the length of the first section;
- a third section extending from the second section to the second opening, wherein a length of the third section intersects at a second angle with the length of the second section;
- a heat insulator positioned around the first section, second section, or third section, wherein:
- the first section is insulated by the heat insulator;
- and
- the third section is uninsulated by the heat insulator such that the third section is exposed to heat generated by electronics disposed within the inner cavity of the housing;
- a sensor array comprising:
- a first vapor pressure sensor located within the flume in the second section;
- and
- a second vapor pressure sensor located within the flume in the second section, wherein the second vapor pressure sensor is located closer to the third section than the first vapor pressure sensor,
- wherein the first vapor pressure sensor and the second vapor pressure sensor are spaced apart by a threshold distance, the threshold distance allowing a change in vapor pressure between the first vapor pressure sensor and the second vapor pressure sensor to be registered by the first vapor pressure sensor or the second vapor pressure sensor as a user wears the housing against a body of the user;
- and
- a processing device in the inner cavity and electronically coupled to the sensor array, the processing device configured to:
- identify an initial hydration condition associated with user information of a user wearing the housing;
- determine a first vapor pressure measurement using the first vapor pressure sensor;
- determine a second vapor pressure measurement using the second vapor pressure sensor;
- determine a sweat rate of the user based on a difference between the first vapor pressure measurement and the second vapor pressure measurement;
- and
- determine an adjusted hydration condition for the user based on the sweat rate.
A device, comprising:
- a housing that forms an inner cavity, the housing comprising
- a top wall;
- and
- a bottom wall opposite the top wall;
- a flume disposed in the inner cavity, wherein:
- a first opening of the flume is disposed at the bottom wall;
- a second opening of the flume disposed at the top wall;
- a heat insulator positioned between the first opening and the second opening of the flume, wherein a first section of the non-linear flume is uninsulated by the heat insulator and a second section of the non-linear flume is insulated by the heat insulator;
- a sensor array, comprising:
- a first vapor pressure sensor;
- and
- a second vapor pressure sensor;
- and
- a processing device in the inner cavity and electronically coupled to the sensor array, wherein the first section is exposed to heat generated by the processing device, the processing device configured to:
- identify an initial hydration condition associated with user information of a user wearing the housing;
- receive a first vapor pressure measurement from the first vapor pressure sensor;
- receive a second vapor pressure measurement from the second vapor pressure sensor;
- determine a flume area sweat rate of the user based on a difference between the first vapor pressure measurement and the second vapor pressure measurement, wherein the flume area sweat rate is a rate of sweating of a body part of the user adjacent to the flume;
- extrapolate the flume area sweat rate to an overall sweat rate of a body of the user;
- determine an adjusted hydration condition for the user based on the overall sweat rate of the body of the user;
- and
- based on the adjusted hydration condition, predict a change in a level of a physiological parameter of the user based on the user information and overall sweat rate.
A device, comprising:
- a housing comprising a perimeter wall disposed around a perimeter of the housing between a top wall and a bottom wall, wherein the top wall, the bottom wall, and the perimeter wall form an inner cavity, and wherein the housing is configured to be worn by a user against the body of the user;
- a non-linear flume extending across the inner cavity, wherein:
- a first opening of the flume is disposed at the bottom wall;
- and
- a second opening of the flume disposed at the top wall;
- and
- a heat insulator positioned between the first opening and the second opening of the non-linear flume, wherein a first section of the non-linear flume is uninsulated by the heat insulator and a second section of the non-linear flume is insulated by the heat insulator;
- a sensor array comprising:
- a first vapor pressure sensor located within the flume at a first location;
- and
- a second vapor pressure sensor located within the flume at a second location;
