Video codec aware radio access network configuration and unequal error protection coding

A processor for wireless communication, comprising:

• at least one controller coupled with at least one memory and configured to cause the processor to:
• detect a video coded traffic stream and a video codec profile for encoding the video coded traffic stream;
• determine an awareness of protocol data unit (PDU) sets of the video coded traffic stream, wherein each PDU set comprises at least one PDU that maps to an application data unit (ADU) comprising at least one network abstraction layer (NAL) unit of video coded data;
• align, based on at least the awareness of PDU sets, each PDU set of the video coded traffic stream to physical layer (PHY) transport elements and channel coding element partitions for a video coded traffic aware PHY transport;
• determine a channel coding rate allocation of the channel coding element partitions based on the video coded traffic aware PHY transport;
• and
• apply a forward error correction (FEC) coding to the channel coding element partitions based in part on the channel coding rate allocation.

A method, comprising:

• detecting a video coded traffic stream and a video codec profile for encoding the video coded traffic stream;
• determining an awareness of protocol data unit (PDU) sets of the video coded traffic stream, wherein each PDU set comprises at least one PDU that maps to an application data unit (ADU) comprising at least one network abstraction layer (NAL) unit of video coded data;
• aligning, based on at least the awareness of PDU sets, each PDU set of the video coded traffic stream to physical layer (PHY) transport elements and channel coding element partitions for a video coded traffic aware PHY transport;
• determining a channel coding rate allocation of the channel coding element partitions based on the video coded traffic aware PHY transport;
• and
• applying a forward error correction (FEC) coding to the channel coding element partitions based in part on the channel coding rate allocation.

An apparatus, comprising:

• at least one memory, and
• at least one processor coupled with the at least one memory and configured to cause the apparatus to:
• receive a configuration comprising a video codec profile used to encode a video coded stream;
• receive a forward error correction (FEC) transmission of the video coded stream comprising physical layer (PHY) transport elements and subsequent channel coding element partitions corresponding to a video coded traffic aware PHY transport;
• receive a channel coding rate allocation of the channel coding element partitions based on the video coded traffic aware PHY transport;
• receive an indication of the video coded traffic aware PHY transport corresponding to an alignment of video coded network abstraction layer (NAL) units of the video coded traffic stream to the PHY transport elements and channel coding element partitions, the alignment based on an awareness of protocol data unit (PDU) sets of the video coded traffic stream, wherein each PDU set comprises at least one PDU that maps to an application data unit (ADU) comprising at least one NAL unit of video coded data;
• apply the FEC transmission of the video coded stream, the received channel coding rate allocation, and the indication of the video coded traffic aware PHY transport to perform channel decoding of the video coded stream to retrieve the corresponding PDU set corresponding to the NAL unit of video coded data;
• and
• use the configuration comprising the video codec profile to decode the video coded stream.
