Abstract
Methods and systems are provided for a redox flow battery system. In one example, the redox flow battery is adapted with an additive included in a battery electrolyte and an anion exchange membrane separator dividing positive electrolyte from negative electrolyte. An overall system cost of the battery system may be reduced while a storage capacity, energy density and performance may be increased.
Claims12
A method for a redox flow battery system, comprising:
- responsive to operation of the redox flow battery system comprising a negative and positive electrolyte in a charging cycle at an ambient temperature,
- plating metal monolayers on an electrode, the metal monolayers including metal cations bound by functional groups of additive molecules and with the metal monolayers separated by layers of the additive molecules, wherein the additive molecules are included in the negative electrolyte of the redox flow battery system in a millimolar concentration and increase a thickness of the plated metal monolayers compared to a thickness of metal plated at the electrode when the additive molecules are absent from the negative electrolyte, and wherein a plating rate of metal onto the electrode at the ambient temperature is greater than when the additive molecules are absent from the negative electrolyte, wherein the plating rate remains greater than when the additive molecules are absent even when a temperature of the redox flow battery system is below the ambient temperature;
- and
- responsive to operation of the redox flow battery system in a discharging cycle, deplating the metal monolayers from the electrode.
1 more element
A method for a redox flow battery system, comprising:
- charging and discharging the redox flow battery system at ambient temperature, the redox flow battery system including a negative electrolyte and a positive electrolyte, the negative electrolyte containing an additive in a millimolar concentration, the additive having a functional group at a first end and an inert tail at a second end, wherein the additive causes metal cations in the negative electrolyte to deposit onto an electrode in monolayers based on adsorption of the functional group onto one of the metal cations and surrounding of a respective metal cation of the metal cations by the inert tail, a thickness of metal monolayers is increased compared to without the additive, a plating rate at ambient temperature when charging is increased compared to without the additive, and the plating rate remains greater than when the additive is absent even when a temperature of the redox flow battery system is below the ambient temperature.
