Abstract
A shingle includes a substrate having an asphalt coating on a top surface of the substrate and on a bottom surface of the substrate. A surface layer of granules is embedded in the asphalt on the top surface of the substrate. A backdust layer of particles is embedded in the asphalt on the bottom surface of the substrate. A sealant is disposed on the backdust. A hydrophobic material is applied to the sealant.
Claims16
A shingle comprising:
- a substrate having a first asphalt coating on a top surface of the substrate and a bottom surface of the substrate;
- a surface layer of granules embedded in the first asphalt coating on the top surface of the substrate;
- a backdust layer of particles embedded in the first asphalt coating on the bottom surface of the substrate;
- a sealant layer comprising a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the top surface of the sealant layer abuts the backdust layer;
- and
- a hydrophobic coating disposed on the bottom surface of the sealant layer, wherein the hydrophobic coating comprises a silicone,
- wherein the hydrophobic coating is disposed on the backdust layer and the sealant layer around a perimeter of the shingle,
- wherein the hydrophobic coating extends a distance between about 0.5 inches and about 3 inches from each edge of a lower surface of the shingle.
5 more elements
A method of manufacturing a shingle, the method comprising:
- coating a substrate with asphalt to form an asphalt coated substrate;
- applying a plurality of granules to a top surface of the asphalt coated substrate;
- applying a backdust material to a bottom surface of the asphalt coated substrate;
- applying a sealant layer to the backdust material, wherein the sealant layer comprises a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the top surface of the sealant layer abuts the backdust material;
- and
- applying a hydrophobic coating to the bottom surface of the sealant layer, wherein the hydrophobic coating comprises a silicone.
