Abstract
Described herein is a coating composition suitable for application to a panel. The coating composition exhibits stability upon exposure to various temperatures, such as temperatures which induce freezing and thawing. The coating composition comprises calcium carbonate; titanium dioxide; opacity pigment composite comprising TiO2 encapsulated within a precipitated calcium carbonate shell; calcined diatomaceous earth; calcium chloride, aluminum hydroxide; and vinyl acrylic polymer. Described herein are also building panels coated with the coating composition and methods of their formation.
Claims17
A coating composition comprising:
- calcium carbonate;
- titanium dioxide;
- opacity pigment composite comprising TiO2 encapsulated within a precipitated calcium carbonate shell;
- calcined diatomaceous earth;
- calcium chloride;
- aluminum hydroxide;
- and
- vinyl acrylic polymer,
- wherein the weight ratio of calcium carbonate and calcined diatomaceous earth to vinyl acrylic polymer is from about 3:1 to about 15:1, from about 4:1 to about 12:1, from about 5:1to about 10:1, or from about 5:1 to about 8.5:1, based on the dry weight of the composition.
A panel comprising a first major surface opposite a second major surface and a side surface extending there-between, the panel coated on at least one surface with a coating composition comprising:
- calcium carbonate;
- titanium dioxide;
- opacity pigment composite comprising TiO2 encapsulated within a precipitated calcium carbonate shell;
- calcined diatomaceous earth;
- calcium chloride;
- aluminum hydroxide;
- and
- vinyl acrylic polymer,
- wherein the weight ratio of calcium carbonate and calcined diatomaceous earth to vinyl acrylic polymer is from about 3:1 to about 15:1, from about 4:1 to about 12:1, from about 5:1to about 10:1, or from about 5:1 to about 8.5:1, based on the dry weight of the composition.
