Abstract
A sea water desalination system and reverse osmosis element for use in a desalination system are provided. The reverse osmosis element includes a body of media material having opposed first and second ends. First and second end cap assemblies are adjacent the first and second ends of the body. A shell of wound composite material encapsulates and retains the body and first and second end cap assemblies together to define an integrated pressure vessel. Methods of assembling are also provided.
Claims28
A filter element, comprising:
- i) a body of media material having opposed first and second ends;
- ii) first and second end cap assemblies, the first end cap assembly at the first end of the media material, the second end cap assembly at the second end of the media material, each of the first and second end cap assemblies including a first port for directing fluid into or out of the media material;
- and
- iii) a unitary shell with a shell opening at each end of the shell, the shell closely encapsulating and retaining the body of media material and first and second end cap assemblies together, and defining an integrated pressure vessel, the first and second end cap assemblies each having a first tubular portion and a second portion, with the first tubular portion having a smaller outer diameter than an outer diameter of the second portion, the first tubular portion of each end cap assembly extending external of the shell through a respective one of the shell openings, each shell opening having an inner diameter that is smaller than the second portion of the respective end cap assembly;
- the first port of each of the first and second end cap assemblies including a first opening that is external of the shell on a radially outer surface of the respective tubular portion;
- a first annular fitting mounted to the first end cap assembly in surrounding relation of the first opening on the first end cap assembly and providing a first connector for fluidly connecting the first opening of the first end cap assembly to a first fluid conduit;
- and
- a second annular fitting mounted to the second end cap assembly in surrounding relation of the first opening on the second end cap assembly and providing a second connector for fluidly connecting the first opening of the second end cap assembly to a second fluid conduit, the first annular fitting having an annular collar surrounding the first tubular portion and with an internal annular groove axially aligned with and in fluid communication with the first opening on the first tubular portion.
A filter element, comprising:
- i) a body of media material having opposed ends;
- ii) an end cap assembly at each end of the body of media material, one of the end cap assemblies including multiple first ports for directing fluid into or out of the body of media material;
- and
- iii) a shell retaining the body and end cap assemblies together, the shell including a central body portion and a pair of opposed end portions, one of the end portions being unitary with the central body portion and narrowing down from the central body portion to a shell opening, the one end cap assembly having a first tubular portion and a second portion, the first tubular portion having a smaller outer diameter than an outer diameter of the second portion, the first tubular portion extending external of the shell through the shell opening in the one end portion, the shell opening of the one end portion of the shell having an inner diameter that is smaller than the outer diameter of the second portion of the first end cap assembly, each first port of the one end cap assembly including a first opening that is external of the shell on a radially outer surface of the first tubular portion;
- and
- a fitting mounted to the one end cap assembly, the fitting having an annular collar surrounding the first tubular portion and with an internal annular groove axially aligned with and in fluid communication with each first opening on the first tubular portion, wherein the fitting can fluidly connect each first port of the one end cap assembly with a fluid conduit.
A filter element, comprising:
- i) a body of media material having opposed ends;
- ii) an end cap assembly at each end of the media material, one of the end cap assemblies including a first port for directing fluid into or out of the media material;
- and
- iii) a shell of wound composite material retaining the body of media material and end cap assemblies together, the shell including a central body portion and a pair of opposed, tapered end portions unitary with the central portion, one of the end portions of the shell tapering inwardly to a shell opening, the one end cap assembly having a first tubular portion and a second portion, the first tubular portion extending external of the shell through the shell opening in the one end portion, the shell opening of the one end portion of the shell having an inner diameter that is smaller than the outer diameter of the second portion of the first end cap assembly, the first port of the one end cap assembly including a first opening that is external of the shell on a radially outer surface of the first tubular portion;
- and
- a fitting mounted to the one end cap assembly, the fitting having an annular collar surrounding the first tubular portion and with an internal annular groove axially-aligned with and in fluid communication with the first opening on the first tubular portion, wherein the fitting can fluidly connect the first port of the one end cap assembly with a fluid conduit.
A filter element, comprising:
- i) a body of media material having opposed ends;
- ii) an end cap assembly at each end of the body of media material, one of the end cap assemblies including a first port for directing fluid into or out of the media material;
- and
- iii) a unitary shell having a configuration retaining the body of media material and end cap assemblies together, the one end cap assembly having a first tubular portion and a second portion, the first tubular portion having a smaller outer diameter than an outer diameter of the second portion, the first tubular portion extending external of the shell through a shell opening, the shell opening having an inner diameter that is smaller than the second portion of the one end cap assembly, the first port of the one end cap assembly including a first opening that is external of the shell on a radially outer surface of the first tubular portion;
- and
- a fitting mounted to the one end cap assembly, the fitting having an annular collar circumscribing a central axis and surrounding the first tubular portion and with an internal annular groove axially-aligned with and in fluid communication with the first opening on the first tubular portion, the fitting including a connector projecting radially outward from the collar, the connector including a central port fluidly connected to the first opening on the first tubular portion of the first end cap assembly, wherein the connector of the fitting can fluidly connect the first port of the one end cap assembly with a fluid conduit.
