Abstract
Implements and application units include a trench closer for closing a trench during applications with respect to agricultural plants of agricultural fields. In one embodiment, a trench closer for a fertilizer applicator includes a bar moved through a field transverse to a direction of travel, a fertilizer applicator connected to the bar for forming a trench in soil. The fertilizer applicator comprises a coulter, a knife, or a coulter and a knife, and a trench closer disposed behind the fertilizer applicator in the direction of travel and connected to the fertilizer applicator or the bar.
Claims21
A trench closer and a fertilizer applicator combination comprising:
- a bar positioned in operation transverse to a direction of travel of the trench closer and fertilizer applicator combination;
- a trench forming apparatus connected to the bar for forming a trench in soil that is laterally offset from a row of plants in a field, wherein the trench forming apparatus comprises a coulter mounting arm, a coulter fertilizer disc mounted to the coulter mounting arm, a blade mounting arm disposed rearward of the direction of travel to the coulter fertilizer disc, and a blade, and wherein the trench forming apparatus is an in-row fertilizer applicator and the trench forming apparatus further comprises a fluid line disposed on the blade to deliver fertilizer from a fluid tank to a fluid outlet to apply the fertilizer to the trench;
- and
- a trench closer disposed behind the trench forming apparatus in the direction of travel and connected to the trench forming apparatus by attachment to the blade mounting arm or attachment to the blade, wherein the trench closer comprises a horizontal member having a width that extends over the trench created by the trench forming apparatus, and the trench closer is not a disk that rolls in a direction of travel, wherein the horizontal member comprises a top bar connected to the trench forming apparatus by attachment to the blade mounting arm or attachment to the blade, wherein the trench closer comprises a first straight planar downwardly extending plate attached to the horizontal member on a first side of the trench, and a second straight planar downwardly extending plate attached to the horizontal member on a second side of the trench opposite the first side, wherein a top edge of the first straight planar downwardly extending plate is at a greater distance from a vertical plane of the trench in a direction of travel from a bottom edge of the first straight planar downwardly extending plate.
An application unit comprising:
- a bar positioned in operation transverse to a direction of travel of the application unit;
- a coulter assembly including a coulter fertilizer disc mounted to a first mounting arm that is connected to the bar to form a trench in soil that is laterally offset from a row of plants in a field and wherein the coulter assembly further comprises a second mounting arm connected to the first mounting arm, an in-row fertilizer applicator mounted to the second mounting arm, and a fluid line to deliver fertilizer from a fluid tank to a fluid outlet to apply the fertilizer to the trench that is formed with the coulter fertilizer disc;
- and
- a trench closer disposed behind the coulter fertilizer disc in the direction of travel and attached to the second mounting arm, wherein the trench closer comprises a horizontal member having a width that extends over the trench created by the coulter fertilizer disc, and the trench closer is not a disk that rolls in a direction of travel, wherein the trench closer further comprises a first straight planar downwardly extending member attached to the horizontal member on a first side of the trench, wherein the horizontal member comprises a top bar connected to the coulter assembly by attachment to the second mounting arm, wherein the trench closer comprises a first straight planar downwardly extending plate attached to the horizontal member on a first side of the trench, and a second straight planar downwardly extending plate attached to the horizontal member on a second side of the trench opposite the first side, wherein a top edge of the first straight planar downwardly extending plate is at a greater distance from a vertical plane of the trench in a direction of travel from a bottom edge of the first straight planar downwardly extending plate.
