Abstract
The disclosure provides a lock with a radially extending cam that can be pivoted electrically or manually by a key. The lock resides in a housing for ease of manufacture and reduction of space, for use, as an example, as a replacement or retrofit for an existing manual cam lock. The cam extends transversely to a first axis and is manually rotatable by a key about the first axis. The cam is also rotatable about a second axis parallel to the first axis by an electrical signal to a motor or a linear actuator connected to a cam mechanism body.
Claims11
A pivoting electrical cam lock comprising,
- a base attached to a first substrate with the base having a cylindrical open bore defining a first axis, a rotating substantially cylindrical mechanical lock mechanism located in the bore having a keyway at a first end and an actuator at an opposite second end, the mechanical lock mechanism adapted so that when a proper key is inserted into the keyway and rotated, the mechanical lock mechanism and actuator rotate with the key,
- a cap fixed to the actuator adapted to rotate about the first axis with the actuator and mechanical lock mechanism, the cap having a cylindrical second bore defining a second axis parallel to the first axis,
- a cam radially extending from the cap and adapted to rotate about the first axis behind a wall in a second substrate with the cap upon rotation of the proper key,
- a linear motor secured to the cap, the linear motor having a rod extending therefrom that moves transversely to the second axis in response to an electrical signal,
- a cam mechanism body with a first end contacting the rod and a second end contacting the cam and adapted so that the cam pivots about the second axis in response to linear movement of the rod in response to the electrical signal behind a wall in the second substrate,
- wherein the cap second bore has a smaller diameter than the base first bore, the cam has substantially flat first and second sides, with a first circular diameter pin having a longitudinal axis parallel to the second axis and depending from the first side of the cam, with the first pin pivotally located in the cap second bore, and a second pin having a longitudinal axis parallel to and offset from the second axis and depending from the second side of the cam and adapted to contact the cam mechanism body second end.
A pivoting electrical cam lock comprising,
- a base attached to a first substrate with the base having a cylindrical open bore defining a first axis, a rotating substantially cylindrical mechanical lock mechanism located in the bore having a keyway at a first end and an actuator at an opposite second end, the mechanical lock mechanism adapted so that when a proper key is inserted into the keyway and rotated, the mechanical lock mechanism and actuator rotate with the key,
- a cap fixed to the actuator adapted to rotate about the first axis with the actuator and mechanical lock mechanism, the cap having a cylindrical second bore defining a second axis parallel to the first axis,
- a cam radially extending from the cap and adapted to rotate about the first axis behind a wall in a second substrate with the cap upon rotation of the proper key,
- a linear motor secured to the cap, the linear motor having a rod extending from one end thereof that moves linearly transverse to the second axis in response to an electrical signal to the linear motor,
- the rod adapted to contact the cam at a point offset from the second axis so that the cam pivots about the second axis in response to linear movement of the rod in response to the electrical signal behind a wall in the second substrate,
- wherein the cap second bore has a smaller diameter than the base first bore, the cam has substantially planar first and second sides, with a first cylindrical pin having a longitudinal axis parallel to the second axis and depending from the first side of the cam, with the first pin pivotally located in the cap second bore for pivotal rotation about the second bore.
