Discontinuity detection in transport streams

A computing device, comprising:

• a memory that stores computer instructions;
• and
• a processor that executes the computer instructions to:
• acquire a sequence of packets for a data stream having a first data packet, a last data packet, a data size, and an encoded data rate;
• determine a maximum time difference for the sequence of packets based on the encoded data rate and data size;
• determine a first timestamp of with the first packet and a second timestamp of with the last packet;
• determine a timestamp time difference between the first timestamp and the second timestamp;
• mark the sequence of packets as having a timestamp discontinuity based on a difference between the timestamp time difference and the maximum time difference.

A system, comprising:

• a receiver configured to receive a sequence of packets for an audiovisual data stream having a first packet, a last packet, a data size, and an encoded data rate;
• and
• a discontinuity detector configured to:
• determine a maximum time difference for the sequence of packets based on the encoded data rate and data size;
• identify a first timestamp associated with the first packet;
• identify a second timestamp associated with the last packet;
• determine a timestamp time difference between the first timestamp and the second timestamp;
• determine that a timestamp discontinuity exists within the sequence of packets in response to a difference between the timestamp time difference and the maximum time difference;
• mark a location of the timestamp discontinuity within the sequence of packets;
• and
• output the sequence of packets and the marked location of the timestamp discontinuity.
