Abstract
Aspects of this disclosure pertain to a device with an elongated body having a distal end. The distal end may comprise a port that permits discharge of a laser energy towards a tissue from an optical fiber located in the distal end. An exterior surface of the distal end may include a cauterization portion that permits discharge of a cauterization energy towards the tissue. In some aspects, the device includes an insulative portion that attaches the distal end to the elongated body and limits energy transfer therebetween. Related systems and methods are also disclosed.
Claims19
A system comprising:
- a cauterization device having a wall defining a lumen and a distal opening at a distal end of the cauterization device;
- an optical fiber configured to discharge laser energy, configured to move relative to the cauterization device, and configured to extend distally through the distal opening, wherein the laser energy is configured to be discharged from the optical fiber towards a treatment area when the optical fiber is extended through the distal opening and wherein the laser energy is further configured to be discharged from the optical fiber towards the cauterization device;
- and
- a sleeve attached to the distal end of the cauterization device, wherein the sleeve includes a thermally insulative portion configured to prevent overheating of the cauterization device.
A system comprising:
- a cauterization device having a wall defining a lumen and a distal opening at a distal end of the cauterization device;
- an endoscope, wherein the cauterization device is at or adjacent to a distal end of the endoscope;
- an optical fiber configured to discharge laser energy, configured to move relative to the cauterization device, and configured to extend distally through the distal opening, wherein the laser energy is configured to be discharged from the optical fiber towards a treatment area when the optical fiber is extended through the distal opening and wherein the laser energy is further configured to be discharged from the optical fiber towards the cauterization device;
- and
- a sleeve attached to the distal end of the cauterization device, wherein the sleeve includes a thermally insulative portion configured to prevent overheating of the cauterization device, and
- wherein the sleeve has a wall defining a lumen, with an opening at a proximal end and a distal end, such that the sleeve forms a socket to receive the distal end of the endoscope.
A method comprising:
- positioning a cauterization member adjacent a treatment area;
- extending a laser fiber through an opening in an endoscope to within the cauterization member disposed on a distal end of the endoscope;
- applying laser energy from the laser fiber to the treatment area to cauterize the treatment area;
- applying laser energy from the laser fiber to the cauterization member to heat the cauterization member;
- and
- cauterizing tissue with the heated cauterization member,
- wherein the cauterization member is removably attached to an endoscope via a thermally insulative portion, and
- wherein the cauterization portion is provided distal to the thermally insulative portion.
