Abstract
The present invention provides for biochar coated particles and a method for coating the particles with biochar.
Claims19
A method for coating plant seeds, the method comprising the steps of (i) preparing a binding solution;
- (ii) placing seeds in a rotary tumbler;
- (iii) dispensing the binding solution into the tumbler with the seeds;
- (iv) tumbling the seeds until the seeds are evenly coated with the binding solution;
- (v) treating a raw biochar pyrolyzed from biomass under control conditions with a liquid solution to obtain treated biochar having an average particle size of <1 mm and properties differing from the raw biochar, wherein the treated biochar improves seed germination, increases seed survivability and increases plant growth and sustains plant life when used with plant seeds;
- (vi) dispensing the treated biochar in the tumbler to coat the seeds with biochar;
- and (vii) drying the seeds.
A method for coating a particle, the method comprising the steps of (i) preparing a binding solution;
- (ii) placing particles in a rotary tumbler, where the particles are selected from the group consisting of stones, polymer beads, biodegradable plastic pellet, and fragments of a mineral;
- (iii) dispensing the binding solution into the tumbler with the particles;
- (iv) tumbling the particles until the particles are evenly coated with the binding solution;
- (v) dispensing biochar in the tumbler to coat the particles with biochar;
- and (vi) drying the particles.
A method for coating plant seeds, the method comprising the steps of (i) treating a raw biochar derived from pyrolyzing biomass under control conditions with a liquid solution to obtain treated biochar having an average particle size of <1 mm and properties differing from the raw biochar;
- (ii) coating the plant seeds with the treated biochar by dispensing the treated biochar into a container with the plant seeds and at least one other additive used to coat the seed, wherein the coating of the seed with the treated biochar improves seed germination, increases seed survivability and increases plant growth and sustains plant life.
